Incentive of analysis

Humanities Core this quarter was very eye opening in many aspects of daily matters. This quarter’s focus relied heavily on being analytical of everything ranging from texts to movies. Two of the most indulging topics that simply left me astonished at how prevalent they occur were orientalism and torture as entertainment.

Torture is depicted in so many media outlets, that it has truly become something that is seen indifferent, especially for audiences that are more ignorant. While listening to Dr.Lazo talk about forms of torture as entertainment such as “Zero Dark Thirty: and videogames my attention was brought into how even I saw torture as nothing but simply a regular aspect of anything. I remember playing GTA 5 and having no issue completing the torture mission without hesitation. However, when I was structuring my op-ed piece and had to revisit gameplay of the scene, I couldn’t watch without cringing at the torture induced. It was simply gruesome and I could see why people would have a strong distaste for such brutality. As I have discussed in former entries, I believe that that plot of the videogame screams of satirical commentary.

Orientalism was a second subject that astonished me when I deeply thought about what it truly does. It deprives people of other “places” of agency and we simply define them as we wish. We dehumanize who they are and instead replace their personality with a generic ideal that applies to them simply because of their facial feature. It’s so ridiculous that in such modern society, orientalism is still widely applied to many of daily lives. Dr.Folgi allowed this to become evident with her presentation of Orientalism in both Coldplay’s video “Hymn for the weekend” and “Lord of the rings”. Overall, I most definitely enjoyed this quarter of humanities core, It has changed both my mentality. I have also become more analytical of anything I read or watch. I have learn many knowledge on the human ideologies, and their applicability to our everyday life. This is not where my use of the knowlege aquired will end, nor where my education will stop. I will persue further expansion of intellect that will aid me both achademically and in future endeavours.
